What is Basis Share?

Basis Share (BAS) is one of three tokens within the Basis Cash ecosystem, designed to help maintain the price stability of the Basis Cash (BAC) stablecoin at $1. It acts as an ownership token receiving inflationary rewards when the ecosystem operates correctly, supporting the decentralised algorithmic stablecoin design. The ecosystem is inspired by the original Basis stablecoin project, which was discontinued due to regulatory challenges.

How does Basis Share work?

Basis Share operates on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token, using Ethereum’s infrastructure, including smart contracts. It works with Basis Bonds to maintain BAC's price stability. If BAC falls below $1, users can purchase bonds at a discount and later redeem them at $1 when BAC exceeds this value. When BAC stays above $1 and bonds are redeemed, new BAC tokens are distributed to BAS holders, incentivising participation and providing rewards.

What are the potential use cases for Basis Share?

Basis Share primarily functions within the Basis Cash ecosystem to achieve price stability for BAC. Potential use cases include:

  • DeFi Applications: Integration into decentralised finance platforms for activities such as yield farming and borrowing/lending services.
  • Inflationary Rewards: Providing an avenue for BAS holders to earn rewards based on the algorithmic adjustments of the BAC supply.
  • Stablecoin Ecosystem Participation: Offering a mechanism to engage with and support a decentralised stablecoin ecosystem.

BAS can be listed on decentralised exchanges like Uniswap, which enhances its liquidity and market presence.

What is the history of Basis Share?

Basis Share was introduced as part of the Basis Cash project launched in late 2020, drawing concepts from the original Basis stablecoin solution, which halted due to regulatory issues in 2018. The launch was characterised by a strong emphasis on community participation, with no pre-allocated shares for the founding team, aiming for organic growth and distribution. Operating on the Ethereum blockchain, BAS has been integrated into the broader DeFi landscape, although specifics on major updates or forks are limited.
