Kava is a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform built on the Cosmos blockchain. It offers collateralized loans based on a variety of different cryptocurrencies, creating a cross-chain platform for collateralized debt positions (CDPs).
Kava works by allowing users to deposit their cryptocurrencies as collateral in smart contracts. The platform then issues a stablecoin called USDX based on the value of the deposited cryptocurrency. Users can repay the debt plus a stability fee at any time to unlock their collateral.
Kava's primary use cases include decentralized lending and borrowing, stablecoin creation, and cross-border payments and remittances. It offers a versatile platform for various financial activities in the crypto sphere.
Kava was developed in 2018 by Kava Labs, founded by Ruaridh O'Donnell, Brian Kerr, and Scott Stuart. The platform officially launched its lending protocol on the Cosmos platform in August 2020, allowing BNB as collateral for loans in USDX. Significant technological evolutions include the introduction of EVM compatibility and integration with the Cosmos IBC for cross-chain operability.
