The Raiden Network is an off-chain scaling solution designed to facilitate near-instant, low-fee, and scalable payments on the Ethereum blockchain. It is complementary to Ethereum and operates with any ERC20 compatible token. As an off-chain solution, it enables users to conduct transactions outside the Ethereum blockchain, which enhances speed and reduces costs.
The Raiden Network operates using state channel technology, specifically through payment channels. These channels are created with smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing for off-chain transactions. The network employs digitally signed and hash-locked transfers, known as balance proofs, to ensure transaction security. It utilizes a pathfinding algorithm for efficient routing of payments and may adopt an onion routing protocol to enhance privacy. By managing off-chain transactions, it alleviates the load on the Ethereum blockchain, significantly improving scalability and reducing transaction costs.
The Raiden Network can be used across various industries and applications:
The development of the Raiden Network was initiated by Brainbot Technologies AG, founded by Heiko Hees. The project aimed to address Ethereum's scalability issues and was first introduced in 2016 during Devcon 2. In October 2017, the Raiden Network completed its ICO, raising funds through a token sale. Subsequent years saw the launch of μRaiden for micropayments and continued development of their client and smart contract solutions. The network's evolution includes plans to introduce Raidos for generalized state channels, demonstrating ongoing commitment to enhancing Ethereum's scalability through innovative off-chain solutions.
