Rocket Pool is a decentralised Ethereum staking protocol that enables users to pool their Ethereum (ETH) to run validator nodes on the Ethereum network. This approach reduces the infrastructure and technical requirements typically needed for node operators, making staking more accessible to a broader audience.
Rocket Pool operates on the Ethereum blockchain, leveraging its Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Users deposit ETH into smart contracts managed by Rocket Pool, which are then used to create validators. These validators earn staking rewards, and users receive rETH tokens, representing their stake in the pool. Rocket Pool uses a model called Minipool Validators, which combines user deposits with node operators' ETH to reach the 32 ETH required to create a validator. Node operators must stake Rocket Pool's native RPL token as collateral to ensure reliable performance.
Rocket Pool was created in 2016 by David Rugendyke, with a focus on democratizing blockchain staking. It received seed funding from ConsenSys Ventures in 2018. After several years of development, the mainnet launched on October 6, 2021. The platform has seen significant growth and community expansion, supported by partnerships, VC investments, and improvements like the upcoming Dencun and Houston upgrades. These upgrades aim to enhance scalability and efficiency, further solidifying Rocket Pool's position in the market.
