MovieBloc is a decentralised film and content distribution platform. It was established to solve the issues arising from conglomerate dominance in the theatre and home entertainment industry. By leveraging blockchain technology, MovieBloc connects filmmakers directly with their audience, offering a fair and transparent ecosystem that eliminates the need for traditional distribution channels.
MovieBloc operates using Ontology's blockchain technology, which provides transparency and efficiency in film and content distribution. The platform utilises smart contracts to distribute revenue between filmmakers and viewers effectively. Filmmakers can upload their films, and when viewers purchase or rent these films, the revenue is automatically and fairly allocated. The platform supports various activities, such as crowdfunding for film projects and tokenisation for investment opportunities, all while utilising the MBL token for transactions.
Potential use cases for MovieBloc include decentralised film distribution, transparent revenue sharing for filmmakers, and crowdfunding for film projects. The platform also supports tokenisation of films for investment and profit-sharing, online film festivals, and community engagement. By fostering an inclusive ecosystem, MovieBloc empowers filmmakers with the tools to bring their creative visions to audiences globally, leveraging its partnerships with entities like PandoraTV and KMPlayer.
MovieBloc was founded by Chris Kang, Jeffrey Jin, and Peter Kim, driven by the Korean video streaming platform Pandora.tv. It was officially launched on 5 May 2019 and began service on 31 December 2019. Significant milestones include listing on several exchanges like Binance and Upbit, moving to the Ontology mainnet, acquiring Cobak, a crypto community service, and establishing MBL Media to enhance its content IP development capabilities. The platform continues to evolve in response to the dynamic needs of the film industry, aiming to democratise access and opportunity for filmmakers worldwide.
