Lisk is a blockchain application platform designed to enable developers to create, distribute, and manage decentralized blockchain applications by deploying their own sidechains linked to the Lisk network. It aims to make blockchain technology more accessible by providing a user-friendly platform for building decentralised applications (DApps) using sidechain technology. Lisk uses a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus algorithm, distinguishing itself through its scalability and ease of use facilitated by its Software Development Kit (SDK) based on JavaScript.
Lisk operates on a mainchain with the capacity for developers to create and manage their own sidechains. This structure supports scalability and flexibility. The network uses the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, where 101 democratically elected delegates are responsible for validating transactions and creating blocks. This system allows for new block creation approximately every 10 seconds. Lisk provides a comprehensive SDK that includes components like the framework, elements, and commander, enabling developers to build blockchain applications efficiently.
Lisk offers a variety of potential use cases across various industries due to its scalability and flexibility. It is being utilised in sectors such as airlines and aviation, manufacturing, IT services and consulting, and staffing and recruiting. The Lisk Incubation Hub supports early-stage startups, particularly in Web3 projects, by providing grants, mentorship, and business development support. Lisk's adaptability is also apparent in its collaboration with platforms like the Optimism Superchain, aiming to boost Web3 adoption in emerging markets. Partnerships with companies like CV Labs and Tenderly further enhance its capabilities and appeal to developers seeking scalable blockchain solutions.
Lisk was co-founded by Max Kordek and Oliver Beddows. The platform originated from Crypti, which was an open-source blockchain app platform launched in 2014, and was forked into Lisk in May 2016. Lisk held an initial coin offering (ICO) in February 2016, raising approximately $5.6 million. The Lisk main network became operational in May 2016. Significant milestones in its history include a major rebranding in February 2018 and the release of Lisk Core V3 in 2021. Lisk continues to develop its sidechain architecture and has maintained a stable presence in the cryptocurrency market since its inception.
